Bankstown continues two-decade support for cricket development in Uganda

A friendship that started with a handshake nearly two decades ago has once again come through for Ugandan cricket. On Thursday, the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) received a major consignment of equipment from its long-time partners, Bankstown District Cricket Club (BDCC) of New South Wales, Australia.

The shipment, filled with essential gear—bats, balls, pads, gloves, helmets, wicket covers, a turf roller, and even coaching literature—will go a long way in boosting cricket development programs across the country.

This partnership dates back to 2005, following Uganda’s debut at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. It was there that Ugandan players crossed paths with Brian Freedman, then manager of the Australian U-19 team. That meeting sparked what would become a steady, supportive relationship grounded in mutual respect and a love for the game.

“This donation is more than just equipment. It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come and what’s possible when people believe in you,” said UCA Chairman Jackson Kavuma. He also acknowledged John Murray, BDCC’s Chairman, for his personal contribution of the turf roller.

UCA CEO Evelyn Kabongerwa Shinyekwa echoed the appreciation, noting that the equipment will have an immediate impact on coaching, training, and youth engagement.

Behind the scenes, the delivery was made possible by the tireless efforts of BDCC Honorary Secretary Martin Klumpp, whose coordination helped everything fall into place.
