Mr Anthony Mula presents strong points in the keynote article. I, however, would like to underscore the importance of an integrated approach to the development question; with specific attention to the Parish Development Model and how it can fit in the Busoga development agenda. Back in 1900s, Busoga’s economy was outstanding and growing steadily with cotton production, hospitable citizens, railway line transportation, values of the Owen Falls Dam, and free fishing activities on the fresh water bodies. The industrial park at Jinja made the town one of the leading commercial centers in Uganda which dispersed the benefits to the whole…

This was alongside Acholi at 68%, Karamoja at 66%, Bukedi at 35%, then Busoga at 29% and Kigezi T 28%. Further UBOS records indicated that of the total number of 8.3million Ugandans reported as poor, Busoga as a sub-region was found to have 1.2million poor people which translates to about 14% Busoga’s contribution to the national poor people numbers In contrast, Busoga thrived in the early 50’s, 60’s to the…

Youth bargain to be heard, but are they responsible enough to call attention to the nation’s challenges, if given a chance to sit at the high table? It is difficult to remember when Busoga wasn’t the portrait of Uganda’s devastating statistics; in maternal and neonatal mortality, in poverty, teenage pregnancies, education et-cetera. Busoga Health Forum, in an endeavor to better the statistics laid a strategy on shaping the future of Busoga Region as it took initiative to empower the youths on personal responsibility, one of the cardinal disciplines to the success and development of a nation. Charity begins at home!…

In this three-part opinion I look at the Busoga through the times and how two giants, Semei Kakungulu and Daudi Kintu Mutekanga contributed to its growth and development. Any history of Busoga, which excludes the simultaneous analysis of the contributions of two men whose times coincided, Semei Kakungulu and Daudi Kintu Mutekanga, is unlikely to be useful and a distortion of the truth. Unfortunately, most history of Busoga has been written by people who were immigrants to Busoga, and whose interest was, or has been, to put their group at the centre of Busoga’s historical dynamics. Kakungulu concentrated on opening…

Luuka: Much as government halted the creation of new administrative units due to lack of resources to fund its operations resulting from a cracked economy, many district councils have continued to sit and pass resolutions creating new constituencies, municipalities, districts and town councils among others. On May, 30th, 2023, Luuka district council passed a controversial unpopular resolution to create a new constituency called Luuka Central. The motion was moved by councillor Shaban Batwala seconded by Hajji Badiru Ngobi. Luuka district currently has two big constituencies; Luuka South and Luuka North. The proposed new constituency will cover Luuka TC, Kyanvuma TC,…

Busoga: According to World Bank and several other reports, Uganda has the youngest age structure in the world, with 77 percent of its population under the age of 30. That, by extension, would imply that young people make up the biggest percentage of Busoga and other regions. How then can young people be mobilized to contribute to the development conversation of Busoga region? When left unattended to or in the hands of skimming politicians, young people are only be mobilized and weaponized to act as hecklers and hand clappers on the periphery of conversations and discussions that tend to shape…
