Uganda Cranes secured a 1-0 victory over Burundi in the first leg of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifiers on Thursday, December 26, at Nakivubo Stadium in Kampala.
The match saw Police FC forward Isaac Ogwang score the only goal in the 35th minute. Ogwang capitalized on a defensive error by Burundi, calmly slotting the ball past goalkeeper Dieudonne Ntibahezwa.
Uganda dominated the first half with several scoring chances. Captain Allan Okello and Jude Ssemugabi both came close, but Okello’s volley went over the bar, and Ssemugabi’s shot was cleared off the line. Burundi’s defense held strong but struggled to break down Uganda’s attacking play.
The second half saw an improved performance from Burundi, but Uganda remained resilient. Substitute Karim Kamana had a chance to equalize with a header but missed. Uganda’s Hakim Kiwanuka also had a late opportunity to double the lead but headed wide.
Despite not being at their best, Uganda held on to claim a crucial win. The return leg will take place on Sunday, December 29, at the same venue, giving Uganda a chance to strengthen their advantage.
Uganda, already qualified for the CHAN 2025 Finals as co-hosts, is using these qualifiers as preparation for the upcoming tournament. Burundi, however, is fighting for the final East African slot to qualify for the competition.
