Uganda Cranes edged past South Sudan with a narrow 1-0 victory at Namboole Stadium, continuing their unbeaten run in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Bevis Mugabi scored the decisive goal in the 47th minute, reacting swiftly after South Sudan goalkeeper Juma Jenard Amuk spilled Jude Ssemugabi’s header from an Allan Okello delivery. Mugabi’s quick response earned him his first goal for the national team and secured three crucial points.
Although Uganda controlled much of the match, they struggled to break down a well-organized South Sudan defense. Despite missing key players like Peter Manyang and Tito Okello, the visitors held their ground and even created a few dangerous chances. Alfred Leku almost capitalized on an error by Uganda’s Aziz Kayondo, but Ismail Watenga made a critical save to keep Uganda in front.
Uganda made key substitutions at the start of the second half, with Allan Okello coming on and delivering the assist that led to Mugabi’s goal. Uganda continued to push forward but couldn’t add to their tally, with Ssemugabi coming close and a penalty shout for Rogers Mato being waved away.
South Sudan fought back in the closing stages, making several attacking substitutions to try and force an equalizer. Paul America Jawa missed a good chance from Rashid Okocha’s cross, and Halid Lwaliwa made a crucial clearance off the line to deny Pal Paul Puk.
The victory keeps Uganda level with South Africa at the top of Group K, both teams sitting on seven points. The Cranes will now head to Juba for the return leg against South Sudan early next week.
