JINJA: Police in Jinja have launched a comprehensive probe into the fatal shooting of Tonny Bagalama, a 34-year-old man who was shot and later died at Jinja Regional Hospital, according to Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson, James Mubi.

Reports indicate that Bagalama and his friend were driving a Toyota Noah with registration number UAY 721S. They made a stop at Prakash Petrol Station along Iganga Road in Jinja city center to refuel.

Allegedly intoxicated after spending the night out at a yet-to-be-identified bar, the revelers reportedly had a disagreement with the station’s security guard over parking.

It is said that the security guard, employed by Wolves Security Company, opened fire on the customer during the altercation, which occurred on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at around 2 a.m.

Bagalama was shot and rushed to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for medical treatment, but despite efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries.

The police are currently reviewing CCTV footage to establish the exact events leading to the shooting.

James Mubi, the Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson, mentioned that the deceased’s colleagues fled with the vehicle after the shooting.

“We are using Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) records to trace the owner of the vehicle involved in the incident. The friend who was with Tonny, Esther, fled with the car,” Mubi said, adding, “I urge Esther to report to the police for questioning to aid the investigation.”

Mubi also appealed to the community to value life and avoid unnecessary conflicts. “We need a clear explanation for the altercation that led to Tonny’s death.”

The officer further noted that private security agencies would undergo review to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Recalling a personal experience, Mubi said, “During my time in Mbale, I intervened in a dispute at Hass Petrol Station over a mere Shs 100 balance. I urge everyone to prioritize life over trivial matters.”

The deceased was identified through his driving license, though his residence could not be established. The details of the alleged shooter have not been disclosed, with police pledging to share further developments regarding the incident.
