Jinja: Nusura Shein, a 24-year-old mother, is breastfeeding three babies she reportedly gave birth to on Monday, July 29, 2024. The surprising turn of events occurred at Whispers Hospital in Jinja city when she delivered quadruplets.

A resident of Kikunu village, Idudi Town Council, Bugweri district, Nusura was shocked by the number of babies, expecting a normal delivery. However, complications arose, necessitating an emergency surgery.

Nusura Shein is married to Shein Juma Hussein, a 47-year-old businessman originally from Bugiri, residing in Idudi, Bugweri district.

Dr. Offong Emem, a specialist doctor at Whispers Hospital, stated that Nusura was immediately taken into the operating theatre, where surgeons performed a Caesarean section. Sadly, one of the four babies did not survive, but the remaining three are alive and are receiving care in oxygen cylinders to ensure their health.

“This is really a blessing. We are doing everything we can to ensure the babies are in good health. It’s unfortunate that one of the children passed away, but we are focused on supporting the three,” Dr. Offong explained.

Of the three surviving children, two are girls and one is a boy. Nusura, who is also currently in good health, expressed her gratitude, saying it was God’s mercy that allowed her to deliver the unexpected babies.

“I am in good health right now. This is my second time giving birth, and I thank God that I delivered four this time. I am happy that it happened to me, as I had only heard of such cases occurring outside Uganda,” Nusura said.

Dr. Offong explained that the most common type of quadruplets occurs when four separate eggs are fertilized by four separate sperm.

“There are, however, various possibilities in the combinations of quadruplets and how they are conceived. Quadruplets may be identical, non-identical, or a combination of both,” Dr. Offong noted.

Juma Hussein, Nusura’s husband, expressed his surprise and joy: “It is really fortunate that we have three children now, especially since we were initially expecting just one. During her first pregnancy, she gave birth to a baby boy.”

Research shows that the most common form of multiples is twins. Statistically, 90% of all multiple births are twins, with the remaining 10% comprising triplets, quadruplets, and other multiples
