Residents in Lwatama Parish, Nangonde Subcounty, Namutumba District are facing a crisis after heavy rain caused widespread damage. The downpour, which started suddenly around 9 pm on Thursday, brought storms and strong winds that lasted nearly an hour.
Fifteen households suffered severe damage as their roofs were blown away by the powerful winds. Eight people were injured and had to be taken to Nsize Health IV for further medical treatment. Initially, they were rushed to Ivukula Health Centre III, but their condition worsened, necessitating the transfer.
Tony Walwasa, Chairperson of Nangonde Subcounty, emphasized the urgency of the situation. He highlighted that the affected individuals are in critical condition and urgently need assistance.
“We are facing a difficult situation where heavy rain has destroyed 15 homes, leaving the victims stranded without essentials like food and shelter. These people urgently need help because they have nowhere to go,” said Walwasa.
He appealed to the government and compassionate individuals to step in and support the affected residents during this challenging time.
“Most of the destroyed houses belonged to elderly women and widows who cannot afford to rebuild their homes now. They desperately need your assistance,” Walwasa added.
Musana Jude Tadewo, District Councillor of Nangonde Subcounty, stated that they are preparing a detailed report to present to district authorities. Their aim is to ensure that the victims receive the necessary aid promptly. He called on the government to address the urgent needs of the community, which is currently grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.
“The situation is critical, and immediate action is necessary to prevent further suffering. Livestock, crops, and other belongings have been destroyed,” Tadewo explained.
Local leaders are urging the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness to provide relief to the affected residents swiftly. They hope that with collective efforts, they can alleviate the hardship faced by those affected by the devastating rainstorm.
