Head teachers in Luuka district are under scrutiny as the Education department cracks down on schools with poor academic performance. The issue came to light during the funeral of the late Kasone Mawazi, laid to rest at Bukendi village in Bulongo Sub County, Luuka district.
Taitika Hussein, the chairman of Bulongo Sub County, raised concerns about parents withdrawing their children from Bugabula Primary School and transferring them to other institutions. He called upon education authorities to intervene and urged parents to refrain from such actions.
Mayor Kawuta Akabwayi of Luuka Town council attributed the exodus of students from local schools to subpar academic outcomes. According to him, parents seek better educational opportunities for their children elsewhere due to dissatisfaction with current school performances.
Bakaki Ayub, representing Luuka woman MP Hon. Esther Mbayo, identified another underlying issue contributing to student withdrawals – the prevalence of job selling within the district. Many parents, he claimed, opt to enroll their children in schools where job opportunities are assured post-graduation.
In response, Simon Wakaze, the chairman of Luuka district, disclosed measures taken by the district’s leadership to address the educational challenges. He revealed that head teachers of underperforming schools will be demoted to class teachers for a full term. This disciplinary action aims to spur improvements in education standards across Luuka district.
Meanwhile, former Luuka North MP Hon. John Baluloba Bagoole Ngobi dispelled rumors of his political retirement. He affirmed his intention to contest the Luuka North MP seat in the 2026 elections. Hon. Bagoole criticized purported “investors” who promise to take constituents to China or Nairobi for development purposes, labeling them as deceitful.
Muzaaya Buruhan Mbalumya, representing Luuka North MP Hon. Luke Kyobe Inhensiko, commended the late Kasone Mawazi for his integrity and hard work. However, he cautioned against complacency regarding aspiring MPs, emphasizing the need for vigilance against unfulfilled promises and lack of progress.
