Jinja: In a passionate address at the Main Street Primary School in Jinja city, Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao, also the President General of the Democratic Party (DP), proclaimed that Uganda’s moment for a new era has arrived. Mao underscored the urgent need for President Yoweri Museveni to facilitate a peaceful transition of power to the younger generation rather than focusing on infrastructure development projects.

Speaking at the thanksgiving ceremony of DP’s Isimail Kiirya, the President of Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) and the newly elected President of the Young Democrats Union of Africa (YDUA), Mao celebrated Kiirya’s victory and highlighted the importance of nurturing young leaders.

“It is now time for the young generation to take over power, and we must effectively nurture them,” declared Mao. The event, which was marked by enthusiastic DP supporters chanting their party slogan “DP Egumile,” attracted various local and national leaders within the Democratic Party.

Emphasizing the values of “Truth and Justice,” DP has been grooming numerous young leaders who have successfully contributed to the nation’s political landscape. Mao believes that the youth will play a pivotal role in shaping Uganda and the African continent’s future by building factories and promoting science and innovation. He called upon President Museveni to combat corruption, tribalism, nepotism, and other divisive practices that have plagued the nation.

Mao’s determination for change is reflected in his “Transition Bill,” which he plans to table in Parliament. He also advocates for negotiations and mediations with President Museveni as a peaceful alternative to a transition of power. Furthermore, Mao has been actively involved in the release of political prisoners and the advocacy for civilians to be tried in civilian courts rather than military tribunals.

Isimail Kiirya, the acting DP spokesperson, stressed the importance of education in African leadership. He encouraged young people to prioritize discipline and respect for leaders, emphasizing the significance of taking risks to become transformative leaders the continent needs. Kiirya also emphasized the importance of integrity and urged young politicians to focus on long-term goals rather than temporary gains.

Julius Balyejusa, the former Member of Parliament representing persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the Eastern region, called on Mao to champion electoral reforms to ensure order and transparency in elections. Opposition parties have consistently raised concerns about election malpractices, including vote rigging and human rights violations, committed by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.

Balyejusa also called on DP supporters to embrace government programs, stressing that poverty affects individuals rather than political parties. He encouraged DP supporters to take advantage of opportunities offered by the government to improve their livelihoods.
