Jinja: Medical experts have issued a stark warning to the public, cautioning against the excessive consumption of staple foods, including posho, cassava, potatoes, yams, rice, cassava flour, pork, and sugar, which have been found to contain harmful substances detrimental to health.

During a seminar organized by the Miracle Health and Wellness Center on Nalufenya Road in Jinja City, participants were educated about the surprising health risks associated with their favorite foods when consumed in excess. It was revealed that starchy foods, in particular, contain various sugars that can attract microscopic bacteria and viruses, potentially leading to diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and obesity.

Dr. Patrick Kizito from the Miracle Health and Wellness Center emphasized the importance of moderating food consumption and paying attention to meal timings. He recommended specific foods for different meals. For breakfast, he suggested boiled eggs, onions, cucumber, tomatoes, and avocado. For lunch, foods like bananas, meat, chicken, beans, groundnuts, fish, and mushrooms were considered ideal. Dr. Kizito warned against excessive consumption of cooking oil, milk, cakes, Irish potatoes, and chips, which he considered harmful to the body. Instead, he advocated for the consumption of fruits like oranges, lemons, and passion fruits.

Regarding dinner, Dr. Kizito explained that it has minimal impact on the body because food tends to be less metabolically active during the night. He advised against consuming heavy meals late at night and recommended a light dinner consisting of vegetables, tomatoes, avocado, and carrots, ideally not later than 8 pm. Dr. Kizito also highlighted the potential health risks associated with the excessive consumption of pork fats, which can weaken the body.

The doctor concluded by cautioning against self-medication, which has resulted in several fatalities due to the misuse of painkillers and other medications. He stressed the importance of seeking guidance from medical professionals to ensure the safe and appropriate use of medications, reducing the risk of drug resistance.

In light of these warnings, it is essential for the public to be mindful of their dietary choices and maintain a balanced and healthy approach to food consumption to mitigate potential health risks associated with these common foods.
