Jinja City is gearing up to celebrate World Car-Free Day 2025, an initiative that promotes safe cycling and a people-centered urban environment. This event crowns three years of research by Coop-Africa, in partnership with Jinja City, aimed at advancing safe cycling in the city.
During a Critical Mass ride held in Jinja on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, authorities emphasized that the research was driven by rising safety concerns—particularly the dangers posed by drivers and motorcycle riders who exceed recommended speed limits.
According to Marieke De Wild, Programs Manager at Coop-Africa, 99% of cars and motorcycles exceed allowed speed limits, endangering the lives of cyclists. For example, on Jinja’s Main Street—where the speed limit is 20 km/h—many drivers travel at 35 km/h or more.
“Ninety-nine percent of cars and motorcycles operate above the allowed speed limit. This is a real threat on the roads,” Marieke noted.
To improve safety, specific roads in Jinja City, such as Masese Industrial Area Road and the Jinja–Namasagali railway line, have been selected for upgrades, including the construction of dedicated bicycle lanes. Additionally, solar-powered speed display screens will be installed to help reduce speeding.
“These screens show drivers how fast they’re going, which helps them adjust their speed and reduces the chance of accidents,” she explained.
Harnest Nabihamba, Jinja City’s Environment Officer, welcomed the Car-Free Day initiative, praising its benefits for public health, physical fitness, and cleaner air. He encouraged parents to consider bicycles as a transport option for their school-going children, pointing out their affordability and health advantages.
“Bicycles are also a commercial option since they are a bit cheaper compared to other means of transport,” Nabihamba said.
Edgar Kabaale, General Manager of Coop-Uganda, thanked all participants in the Critical Mass event and highlighted the vital role bicycles play in education, healthcare, business, sports, and beyond.
In collaboration with the Jinja City Council, Coop-Uganda plans to commemorate World Car-Free Day in September, recognizing and appreciating cyclists’ contributions to creating a carbon-free city.
